I'm asked the question often on how to pick out the right red lipstick, dress or clothing for your skin tone. Having the right shade of red lipstick is like owning that little black dress in your closet. Do you know that the right shade of red can make your face pop or selecting the wrong shade of red can become a nightmare that you will never forget. Well, I do want to let you know that selecting that right red lipstick, dress or wardrobe piece really depends on your skin undertones especially in women of color. Frankly, you will have to go through a little trial and error before finding that perfect red shade of lipstick. I know when I find that perfect red lipstick I will buy a couple at a time to keep in stock for those really special occasions that I will encounter.

Follow this general rule of thumb when selecting shades of red lipstick:

Dark Skin can wear deep red, red with blue undertones, berry, cherry, wine and brick reds.

Medium Skin can wear red with brown undertones.

Light Skin can wear red with yellow and orange infused reds.

Light Brown Skin can wear red with orange infused reds.

Fair Light Skin can wear cool reds with blue undertones, cranberry and berry.

I personally love to mix my lipsticks. Who likes to settle for just one color. My motto is that when you can't find what your looking for create it.

Bonus: the shade of red lipstick may also vary depending on the color of your outfit too.

How to select the right shade of red when it comes to your wardrobe:

You should select red wardrobe pieces based on your complexion and undertones. The same rule applies as above when it comes to your clothing.

Red is a very powerful color that exudes attention and passion. The venue by which you are attending is very important to the shade of red that is worn. Know your audience.
